AEA PRESIDENT-ELECT NOMINATIONS CLOSE 7th JULY
Nominations are now being sought for the President-elect position on the
AEA council. The President-elect shall serve a term of up to one (1)
year after which time he or she will automatically assume the position
of President of the Council on the expiry or resignation of the
incumbent, without a new election (Rule 9.1(f), AEA constitution).
Nomination forms must be returned to Alice Rumbold by the 7th July.
NOMINATIONS FOR AEA STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE
Nominations are now open for the AEA student representative. This role provides a great opportunity to be a co-opted member of the AEA council and represent the needs of your fellow students from Australia and New Zealand as well as contribute to the networking and professional development of the epidemiological student community.
This position entails the organisation and running of student workshops for the AEA Early Career Award recipients held at the AEA annual conference. In addition, the student representative maintains the student e-mail list and garners student contributions to the AE as well as acting in a general representative role for students on the AEA council.
The role typically requires only one day a months work. The position is a wonderful opportunity to gain an inside view of Australasia’s professional epidemiological association, to make professional contacts within the discipline, and to assist in the intellectual endeavours of other students. The student representative is expected to attend the AEA annual conference and subsidies are provided to help meet attendance costs as required.
The position is open to any student studying towards a postgraduate degree in epidemiology or public health and a typical term is 1-2 years, with the position ending after completion of your studies. The term will commence at the AEA AGM in September 2008.

AEA General Meeting
An AEA General Meeting will be held on the 9th May 2008 in Room 256, La Trobe University City Campus, 215 Franklin Street, Melbourne, from 4pm to 6pm. The General Meeting will include welcome drinks, a vote on the proposed constitutional amendments, and a presentation by Alice Rumbold from the Menzies School of Health Research on ‘Cancer in Indigenous Australians: An overview’.

Public Health Nutrition Conference – Adelaide 11-12th July 2008
Public Health Nutrition in Australia: Principles to Practice, Rhetoric to Reality
SA Health is proud to sponsor a national conference that will give public health nutrition practitioners the chance to share new ideas in public health nutrition.
The conference will look at:
· socioeconomic and environmental factors impacting on food and health
· new strategies for action and methods required to evaluate outcomes.
Evening symposium (discussion and debate) - The Dietary Guidelines are killing Australians!
Guest speaker: Professor Adam Drewnowski, Director of the Centre for Public Health Nutrition and Professor of Epidemiology and Medicine, University of Washington.
Research focus: the relationship between poverty and obesity, covering food costs and availability and the current inequalities in health status.
New ideas and participant interaction will be encouraged through:
· opening and keynote addresses
· proffered papers
· workshops
· discussion forums
· plenary sessions

Australia's health 2008 conference - Tuesday 24 June 2008

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare is hosting Australia's health 2008 conference with the theme of "How are we going? How do we know?"
The conference showcases the latest information on health and illness, uncovering what's going on in our hospitals and health services, and where we are spending our money. The conference also includes the public release and launch of Australia's health 2008, the AIHW's flagship report on the nation's health and health services.
We have a range of engaging speakers such as Dr Neal Blewett, (former Hawke government health minister), Dr Norman Swan (will facilitate a debate and panel), Dr Helen Zorbas, Assoc Professor Ted Wilkes, Professor Mike Daube and Mr Gordon Gregory. These speakers and many more will look at where we have come from, what's happening now and what's likely to happen in the future!
The one day conference, dinner and Australia's health 2008 publication will be $440 (includes GST).

Revival of MEG
We are reviving the Melbourne Epidemiology Group (MEG) and hope you can be there.
Date: Thursday 28th February
Time: 5pm to 6.30pm
Venue: Conference Room B, Murdoch Childrens Research Institute, 10th Floor, Royal Children's Hospital
Directions: Take the blue lifts in the main Building of the RCH to the 10th Floor and follow the signs. Parking should be reasonable at 5.00 pm, either in Flemington Road or Gatehouse Street.

1. Discussion / Ideas re possible activities:
a. weekend meeting / workshop
b. day meeting / workshop
c. talks by visiting or local epidemiologists
d. journal club or regular workshop type activities on methodological issues.
2. Organisation of the AEA Annual General Meeting on Friday 5th September. As stated in the letter sent to all members on 20th January, the AGM cannot be held at the Population Health Congress because it is too early in the year. We therefore need to have an AGM outside of the annual conference and it is likely to be 5th September.
3. Volunteers for committee or to organise specific events.
4. Any other business.
